Providing his knife sharpening service to local residents makes ‘The Knife Guy’ happy.

Biz Profile

Dull knives? Scissors that won’t cut? Bring them to Master Sharpener Fred Wheeler at the Grosse Ile Gardens of Hope.

Fred learned the art of sharpening from his father who worked at a men’s shirt factory for 45 years. “I kicked it up a notch because I became a toolmaker,” says Fred. Besides sharpening a variety of dull edges for over 60 years, Fred has also become adept at restoring tools and furniture. “I don’t sharpen like other people. Whatever I sharpen is a high-quality edge. Another thing I do is restoration on the product. Nobody does that!”

I like to do this because I like to talk to people.

Fred Wheeler

Fred is the real deal when it comes to his craft and has the stories to prove it. “I’ve traveled all over the world,” he says, utilizing his expertise at companies that made products like computer memory cores and spark plugs. “Every single spark plug made in the United States is made with [my company’s] equipment.” And although Fred retired in 2005, that has not slowed him down. Providing this service to people makes Fred happy he says. “I like to do this because I like to talk to people.”

As a proud resident of Grosse Ile since 1968, Fred provides another service to his neighbors. Island Home Watch LLC is Fred’s house sitting service that offers folks peace of mind while they are away. Fred says these services keep him busy and allow him to meet new people.
